Tepid Rhythm pres. Charles Moon 2024 Upstairs at Angel Bar

In what has continued to be reliable fashion thus far for Tepid Rhythm events, it was a beautiful afternoon for dancing. Sunshine in the day, and very little wind. It had shaped up to be a lovely afternoon and as the sun went down the city bussled with lively activity. Bars, Restaurants and theatre shows all bustled as the night grew darker the doors of Angel Music Bar opened to welcome for the peoples late night drink.

Downstairs the cocktail bar roared into action, bartenders concocting negroni’s and whisky sours as the first of our curated lineup began their music journey. Dusty K began the evening that had the bar team sharing their praise for the music. I was sad that I was spending most of my time upstairs setting up the room upstairs while this set took place, I would have loved to have heard what was played! I did periodically wander down to hear as much of the action as I would and I was always impressed with the vibe. NRP (a close friend and collector) and Ruby Lou (an Area 3000 presenter) were two young, upcoming DJ’s I entrusted with the peak time downstairs crowd as they did not disappoint. Fun groovy house records really transitioned the two rooms seamlessly with each other throughout the night.

The room upstairs was as good as I’ve ever heard it. The signature Tepid Rhythm water lamp gave the dancefloor its Balearic feel to it and the stage looked simple yet unique. As host, I took the reins to build the energy for the first couple of hours. It was slow to start but it was nice to see some old friends enjoy the intimacy of upstairs room for themselves, some for the first time. The selections on my behalf were restrained for the most part but I always enjoy playing deeper and slower tunes.

Charles Moon, stepped up to the decks as the room began to get real busy, dancers began climbing the stairs in the pursuit for the next level of enjoyment. He kicked off his session with some Chicago Deep House sounds, some minor Detroit industrial elements sprinkled in the between. Charles is originally from Austin, TX, so it was great to hear these influences extend into his early selections. One track he dropped early in the mix was an edit which sampled Robert Aaron’s ‘Sax In The Ozone’. A classic groove from originally from 1996 that I recognised on the d-floor and it really brought the vibe up!

As the momentum built Charles entered into serious hypnotic territory, emphasising deeper baselines with tracks like Chasindub’s ‘She Is’ and hallucinating higher frequencies. Rotating between extreme deepness to acid house all connected with ladened with that iconic 808 rhythmatism. You could also hear a certain Berlin influence of the night, a sonic journey that would have certainly come from one of the many underground institutions there. It made sense when I learnt that Charles spent some time living in Berlin and all of the collected experience through his travel was heard through the music.

It was a marvellous set and I was excited to see where it would be taken as Colette took over to close the evening. With such an experience in handling catering to the Melbourne crowd, it was amazing to see a huge broad range of music to educate the dancers. From the get go, it was straight to business with a big techno sound! Fast yet rhythmic percussion yielded some more sweat from the dancers. It most from Techno to Afrobeat with even a little bit of melodic techno thrown in there too. But what I found to be the most memorable part of Colette's closing set was the last half hour which saw here break down her entire set to perform some deep RnB and breakbeat Hip Hop. Tracks like Bell Biv Devoe's 'Poison' was one tune that really went down super nicely! It was a great way to watch a DJ wind down a crowd whilst still bringing the groove to see out the night.

When I thanked Colette for her performance, I asked about her intention to wind down the night with some older hip hop tracks. She said something along the lines of how all of her House and Techno music has sampled so heavily on older categories of music that she would educate the audience by playing some of the orignal music. The music that is for the most part lost in todays dancefloors. That she herself grew up listening to. It was a wonderful insight and helped add an extra dimension to the set. Personally I think a closing DJ should always subscribe to the practice of winding down the night and I couldn't be more happy that Colette was one of those :)

At this point it was 4am and upstairs began its preparation of getting packed down. Downstairs the smokers was still alive with energy. Stangers meeting and chatting away, with Fitz-E closing down the proceedings downstairs. A close friend who DJ's at many of the citys best watering holes.

All in all, it was a fantastic turnout for the whole night. One thing I took away was how long people stayed in the room upstairs. It goes to show how much quality was involved in the entire. A big thankyou to Charles, Colette, Larissa, Jack who helped on the door, Mitch and Charlotte. Looking forward to the next one!
