Tepid Rhythm Live Poster 2023

In celebration of two years of broadcasting, Area 3000 and Luke CVR presented a special party to celebrate its time on the station. A beautifully warm and sunny day, friends and fam of the show gathered in a dark and moody room at Avalon Bar on Brunswick St, Fitzroy to celebrate Tepid Rhythm with a curated selection of world class DJ's. Though the concept was mulled over many months, the event was only finalised and shared with only a weeks’ notice and scheduled in the middle of the festive period, it was heartwarming to see so many lovely friends attend the evening.
For many there, it would have felt quite sparse, but this intimacy was by design and fully intentional.

The days guests kicked off with Olivas. Both originating from Spain, the pair connected in the Melbourne club scene and have since become staple residents in many Melbourne institutions such as Revolver Upstairs, Kiss FM and more. In a mostly empty room, the pair performed an mix varying between downtempo ambient sonics to deep steady and groovy house tunes. It could have been so easy for Teresa and Lucia to have kept their record bag zipped up and opt for digital music formats, saving their collection for a busier dancefloor. To their credit and dedication to the craft, the pair performed a vinyl only mix during the heat of the day.

Friend 'Moe Mang' performed some exquisite dubby house to ease in the afternoon, and tripped out excursion of lost kicks and rhythm. A general purveyor of the quirky and humorous side and the dance music culture, a sound design student it was evident to hear the attention to sonic detail. FX delays and dub arrangements littered the mix which provided an unexpected but vital contrast to the curated lineup. A void and oversight that was seemingly resolved by Moe’s wonderful addition.

With the venue a little livelier, it was very exciting to have a secret weapon of the Melbourne community to continue the journey. Indonesian DJ and selector, Bayu Aditya was next to carry on the proceedings. A long-standing co-resident of Dr Morse and collaborator of Berlin/Melbourne based label A Colourful Storm, Bayu provided an ultimate selection of beautiful dance music. Hypnotic, groovy and specific to the sound system it was wonderful to witness a selector so dedicated to the sound as we witnessed him moving from behind the mixer to in front of the speakers. Breaking down his mix between music of square waves and round waves to cater to the Yamaha system perfectly. For many attendees, it was their first experience with Bayu and many complimented his selection and attention to detail. A truly deep and hypnotic house experience.

To close our list of guest selectors, we had RRR radio host and Companion label co-head Millù to close the evening. Providing 2 hours of deep tech house was a great and fun finish to the evening. With such experience like closing Golden Plains 2016 and support slots for the likes of DJ Nobu and Eris Drew/Octo Octa, the audience were in great hands. The dancefloor converged in movement and smiles as the transitioning music flawlessly glided to the evenings close. It felt like such and honour and privilege to have the Millù all to ourselves, an intimate and beautiful dancing experience as the smoke machine hummed through the room.

A wonderful first party and a great gift to all the wonderful supporters of the Tepid Rhythm radio show. Here’s to many more lovely parties to come in the future.
